1 iron ore pelletizing plant in operation in the country since 2011
100% reuse of water used in operational processes in Sohar
Vale has contributed significantly to the growth of industrial infrastructure in Oman. In 2007, we opened our first office in the Middle East, in Muscat. Now, at our complex in Sohar, we operate an iron ore pelletizing plant, a port terminal and a distribution centre. Find out more at vale.com/oman
In 2009, Vale began work on constructing Sohar Industrial Complex, which now consists of one pelletizing plant, with two lines, a distribution centre and a deep-water terminal. This terminal is one of the first ports in the world to receive very large ore carriers (VLOCs). Able to carry 400,000 metric tons, VLOCs transport iron ore from Brazil to Oman, from where it is sent out in small ships to nearby destinations.
In all, Vale invested US$2 billion to get these operations fully operating. The resulting work generated more than1,000 jobs.
Vale’s operations in Oman seek to follow the sustainable production standards that have been adopted by the company at its sites across the world. We have invested US$50 million in Oman in technologies to reduce the environmental impact of Sohar Industrial Complex.
Facilities such as electrostatic precipitators and a wind fence extending for slightly over 3 km have been installed to control particulate emissions around the complex. The green technologies implemented at Sohar include two fundamental systems: one that reuses 100% of the water used in operational processes, and another that continuously monitors particulate emissions.
Extending for 1.4 km, this terminal is one of the first in the world to receive very large ore carriers (VLOCs), ships capable of carrying up to 400,000 metric tons, which transport iron ore from Brazil to the coast of the Sultanate of Oman in the Persian Gulf. The terminal is integrated with a distribution centre, enabling Vale to store large amounts of iron ore and pellets to meet demand at any time from its customers in the Middle East, North Africa and Asia, including India.
Since 2011, Vale has been running this project, aimed at social development in local communities, in partnership with Sohar Aluminium and the Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company (Orpic). The project is similar to those conducted by the Vale Foundation in Brazil.
This industrial complex is composed of a pelletizing plant, with two lines, each one nominally capable of producing 4.5 million metric tons of direct reduction pellets per year, and a distribution centre able to handle 40 million metric tons a year. The distribution centre enables Vale to store large amounts of raw iron ore available on a just in time basis. In this way, the company can at any time meet demand for iron ore products in the Middle East, North Africa and Asia, including India.
US$ 2 billion was invested to get the complex fully operating. Sustainability is one of its main principles: the complex has a system for reusing 100% of the water used in the production process.
